Chapter #4

Some "me" time.

"--and that's why I'm feeling so nervous about tomorrow," finished Melona. She looked up into the round, warm face of the woman who was washing her hair.

Layla was a kindly, matronly holstaur of about middle age. What that meant was that she sported the height, immense curves, and horns that most women of her species possessed. She massaged Melona's scalp with delicate, yet powerful hands. Holstaurs gravitated towards fields where they could care for others. Their appearance and physical strength made them ideal for the role; Melona had heard rumors that they had pheromones that put young people at ease, but she was fairly certain those were just unfortunate stereotypes. Even if they weren't, Melona trusted Layla. She always listened to her complaints, knew when to chime in when advice or stay quiet, and was one of the only people in town who knew how to handle Melona's unruly hair, Melona included.

"What do you think?" asked Melona. Layla smiled as she grabbed the spray nozzle.

"Honey, it sounds like you know what's going on in your classes. You just need to push through whatever's keeping you from casting a spell."

Melona nodded slightly, trying not to get water in her eyes. "Yeah, you're right." She shook her head. "I just don't know what it is."

"You want my advice?" asked Layla.

"Always."

"You need to learn how to relax, Mel. You've got more stress in your little finger that most girls your age have in their whole bodies. I can feel it in your hair, you know. Stress makes the roots tougher and less silky."

Melona had no idea if that was true, but accepted it at face value. "That's the thing, I never learned how to relax. My parents always wanted me to be the one to step up to inherit the Pearsly name, and the training for that never came with a how-to for deep breathing exercises."

Layla turned off the nozzle and produced a towel. She dried Melona's hair. "Well, you're in luck. I have some ideas."

"What?" asked Melona. "I'll do anything."

"Well--" Layla said.
