It was a relatively simple spell, Melona had heard. War mages used it in the field back in the day to make hardtack rations last for far longer than they should. A single bite was like a full meal, Professor Luminata had said. So, it stood to reason that the chips would be the perfect target, right? It'd be like she had a full month's worth of meals in a bag in her room. She wouldn't have to leave, she could just keep practicing until eventually she got something right.

The bag of chips didn't seem to change. That was to be expected. It wasn't as though the process of food becoming more calorically and nutritionally dense was a showy affair. The proof of the pudding, or the chips as it were, would be in the eating. Melona grabbed a single chip and ate it. As she swallowed, she instantly felt full.

"Oh my gods," she said, gasping. This was a miracle. Not only did she succeed at making the chips more filling, she had successfully cast a spell. One that she'd never tried before, even. Maybe this was a sign. Maybe she was finally developing some real magical talent. Maybe--

Melona soon noticed something.
