Chapter #2Ashley Mans Up by: BeeJay I'm Ashley Adlon, and this is my story.
I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My dad was a car salesman; most of his colleagues had fancy names for their jobs, but Dad always said that his job was selling cars, so that's what he called himself. Besides me, there were my younger sister, Katherine, and my younger brother, Christian. My life was pretty ordinary.
And then it wasn't.
******************************
The day before my 17th birthday, I was at the mall, with my best friends, Audrey Segall and Pamela Dana. We were looking at the latest fashions, and having a good time.
And then my boyfriend, Terry Duke, ruined it.
Oh, it wasn't like he'd set out to take a big, steaming pee on my day; he was just walking around, with his arm around a girl.
The trouble was, even though he and I had been dating for five months, the girl he had his arm around wasn't me.
"Maybe it's okay," Audrey said. "Maybe she's his cousin or something."
"I hate to say it," Pamela countered, "but nobody in Milwaukee kisses their cousin like that."
I didn't need to see or hear any more; I walked right up to that no-good, cheating scumbag, and slapped him across the face. Then, I told his side piece, "If you want him, you're welcome to him." Then I went back to Audrey and Pamela, and we walked out.
I was quiet on the way back home. When I got home, I went straight up to my room, closed the door, and buried my face in my pillow.
After a few minutes, there was a knock on the door, and Mom let herself in, sitting on my bed. Putting a hand on my shoulder, she said, "The girls told me about what happened. Are you okay, sweetie?"
I didn't even lift my head. "I am through with boys."
I stayed in my room until supper. Then, I sat at the dinner table, eating silently. Then, I went back to my room, and went to bed. It was a hot night, so I took off all my clothes. Finally, I fell asleep.
******************************
When my alarm went off on the morning of my 17th birthday, I didn't feel like listening to the Morning Zoo Crew; so I shut off my radio, and lay on my back, staring up at the ceiling. Slowly, I woke up, and decided it was time to get ready for my birthday.
I sat up, and I couldn't believe my eyes.
I was looking at my body; but it was the body of a boy.
I screamed.
Mom burst in. "Ashley? Did you - " She looked straight at me. "Who are you? What have you done with my daughter?"
"Mom, I don't know how to explain it; but it's me. I'm Ashley." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
