Nobody really knows where it came from, or how it started. There are any number of theories out there (and I do mean out there), but nobody can point to anything and say "There; that's the source of this disease."
That's because this disease is unlike any other in history. Other diseases make you sick; a few can actually kill you; but this one actually changes your body. It changes what your body's made of, and how it works. It changes your appearance, sometimes drastically. And, even when it's run its course on you, you can still spread it.
The first day you have it, it feels like just a cold; the only difference is, nothing works to alleviate your symptoms. The next day, though, you start to change. By the time it's done, you're not the same as you were before; you're a three-dimensional cartoon character. That's why most people who aren't in the medical profession call it Toonmonia.
They're not sure why it affects different people differently, but it does. People with Toonmonia turn into one of five different kinds of toons:
1. A cartoon version of the original person. These folks have a somewhat easier time adjusting; after all, for all the differences, at least the face is familiar.
2. An anime character. It's all there: the big eyes; the spiky, unkempt hair, often in an unusual color; the tendency to turn into a chibi when yelling. Those who are genre savvy tend to get nervous if they see any tentacles nearby.
3. A Disney princess. Whether you're a boy or a girl, this disease can bring out your inner princess.
4. A sexy toon. Most of these aren't really bad girls when the disease is done; that's just how they were drawn.
5. A talking animal. This can be the hardest. These patients may or may not be anthropomorphic when they finish changing.
Perhaps the strangest thing about Toonmonia is that it can even affect inanimate objects. Clothes, furniture, even food becomes cartoonified with a touch. If the contact is brief, the object can eventually revert to its former composition; make it long enough or frequent enough, and the change can be permanent. For this reason, it was eventually decided to relocate the toons to their own communities, usually called Toonville or some such.
