Chapter #5

The Toon Me

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
By mid-afternoon, the change was complete. I wasn't flesh and blood anymore, but ink and paint: A toon. I looked in the mirror, studying my naked body. Never saw Daphne or Velma like this, I thought. But then, I'm sure there's fan art out there somewhere; not that I need to see any of it.

As I put my hospital gown back on, it became a cartoon hospital gown. I wonder how long it'll take for me to get used to that? And how long the effect lasts?

I left the bathroom, and found Tabitha sneezing and coughing into a pillow. "You look like a cartoon show I saw on YouTube," she said.

"Don't I know it," I replied, getting back into bed. As I did, the sheets became cartoonified. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Giving this to you. I know how rough it is."

"Hey, we don't know that this is connected to what happened to you."

"We don't know it isn't, either. All we know is, what I've got now is more catching than the common cold."

A nurse in a hazmat suit came in. "We're monitoring everyone you've come into contact with recently," she said. "We'll know soon enough if your current condition is connected to this other illness." She studied my bed. "Wonder how long this lasts?"

"Whatever I touch changes when I touch it," I replied. "Sometimes, it changes back when I leave the room."

"We'll know more the longer you stay. I wonder how you wash cartoon fabrics? I never thought about it when I was a kid."

"It wasn't something anyone ever thought we'd need to know. And then this happens."

"How do you handle food?"

"Like everything else, it changes when I touch it. It tastes like food to me, but people like you say it smells like paint."

"Interesting. Well, let's get your friend checked out."

Tabitha went with her.

An hour later, Tabitha came back. "How'd it go?" I asked.

"Clean bill of health," she replied, sneezing. "Like they can't even find what's making me sneeze."

"I won't be surprised if it's this."
