It has been about six months since the first cases of Toonmonia began to spread around the world. World governments dealt with the virus in a variety of ways; some, like the United States, housed the infected in specially constructed communities, while others, like China, went so far as to exterminate the infected at the first sign of the disease. There were even rumors of Russia and Iran working together to weaponize the virus.
Commerce between the uninfected and the infected had only recently begun, owing in large part to fear of contracting the disease. It was also delayed due to the actions of government officials, such as my father, Missouri Representative Gerald MacFarlane. My father was the epitome of an Evangelical Conservative, doing everything in his power to make life difficult for those he perceived to be different.
He and others in Congress went so far as to filibuster the bill that would fund the establishment of Toon settlements across the country for nearly four days. I'm curious how he'd react if he discovered that I, his son Jimmy, frequented the brothels in the settlement closest to my apartment. I know it's risky for me to do this, but the brothels had an injection that was nearly 50% effective at preventing disease transmission.
I've always been one to take chances; I just didn't expect this to be the day my luck ran out.
