Chapter #6

My First Experiment

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
The next morning, after breakfast, Dad gave me several boxes. "What's in these?" I asked.

"You can find out," he replied, "by opening them. After all, that's why I gave them to you."

Opening the top box, I found a pair of goggles, with a thick elastic band to hold them in place. "Does this mean... ?"

Dad nodded. "It's time to begin your instruction in mad science. Open the others."

The second box held a white lab coat, with a flap that buttoned up. The third held elbow-length black rubber gloves. I could feel my pulse pound with excitement as I put everything on. Then, I followed him down the stairs into the lab, closing the door behind me.

In the lab, Dad put on his coat, gloves, and goggles. "Say it," he said. "You know you want to."

I knew exactly what he meant. "The fools!" I yelled. "I'll make them all pay!" And then I let loose an evil laugh, like I heard in every mad scientist movie they show on television.

When I was done, Dad said, "Not bad. Your laugh needs work: It should sound like it's bubbling up from a well of madness." And then he demonstrated, with a laugh that sent shivers down my spine.

When I had recovered, I asked, "What should we do first?"

"Just about anything you wish to do," he replied. "There are very few bad ideas in this laboratory; one that you'll want to remember is the importance of staying away from South America."

"Why? What's there?"

"Not what, but who. You and I are descendants of the famous Victor Frankenstein; and South America is where his creation lives."

"You mean the real Frankenstein monster? With bolts in his neck and everything?"

"Popular fiction takes its liberties. In reality, Victor created his being by a process like recombinant DNA; there was no grave robbing or stitch work involved. People were terrified by its large size and grotesque features; as a result, it swore enmity against the human race in general, and the Frankenstein name in particular."

"And it still feels that way?"

"From what I've heard, much of its rage has abated with the centuries; he no longer wishes to destroy humanity. However, I have no wish to discover if his feelings toward our line have changed; why take chances?"

"Okay, note to self: No trips to South America. But I am looking forward to my first achievement: I want to make fish that glow in the dark."

"A worthwhile goal. Any particular variety of fish?"

"Whatever we can get from the pet store."

"Then let us begin."
