Chapter #5

Toshio's Wrath

    by: Kilbil Author IconMail Icon
As always, Toshio was standing in the midst of a devastated city, heart pumping a mile a minute and sweat coursing down his chest in buckets as he puffed his chest in triumph.

What few survivors were left to crawl amidst the wreckage no doubt had countless questions: why them? Hadn't they provided him with enough tribute already? What had they done to deserve losing everything all over again? The answer had been simple, really: Toshio hadn't liked the way that those insects had been looking at him.
They disrespected him, and so he decided to go to work remodeling the place until it took on a more suitable form. That would teach them all for not bowing before his toes fast enough when he demanded them to - there was no room in his world for stragglers. You were only courting death that way.

As the sun rose high into the clear blue sky, the little boy looked upon his handiwork with a familiar sense of pride and accomplishment. Nothing but ruins stretched out as far as the eye could see, with not a single skyscraper left standing in his wake. Satisfied, he raised his head up high he roared in glorious triumph. Finally, his righteous fury had been satiated! As last, he could now rest in peace.

Without any preamble, the boy flopped down onto the ruining asphalt, decimating the highways in an explosion of dust and ash as he lied on his back, and reflected.

No one quite knew where the kaiju had come from. There were rumors, of course, with some saying they were aliens that had come to the planet long ago, and other saying they had lived deep within the Earth's mantle long before humanity arrived, only just now awakening to wreak their vengeance on the pestilent invaders that had come to soil their rightful territory. Either way, one day, they had suddenly emerged deep from the darkest trenches of the ocean floor, and humanity had little choice but to adapt themselves as best as they could.

There were many different kinds of kaiju that had made themselves know to the world; from cruel monsters that took euphoric pleasure in the destruction they caused to exceptionally kind, gentle souls that never seemed to want anything but to protect the creatures of Earth from any harm; from unmitigated tyrants that were content with lording it over the hapless, to sterling heroes who fought for all things good, whether it be justice, truth, or simply the sanctity of life. Japan in particular had become a hotspot for all sorts of kaiju, to the point where they had more or less integrated themselves as a part of everyday life, whether it be as living natural disasters or as guardians.

Out of all the kaijus, though, Toshio had quickly grown a fearsome reputation as the most ruthless and animalistic of them all. Throughout Japan, the name "Toshio" quickly came to be seen as an omen, a dark beast whose coming inevitably meant misfortune and despair. Most of the southern coast had been rendered an uninhabitable wasteland thanks to him, with the few settlements left standing being forced to tend to his every whim. Whether it was feeding him as much fish and whales as they could, or washing him until he was sparkly clean, there was no end to the demands that he would make, before inevitably, they would slip up, and Toshio would see a chance to once more bring ruin to what was once a proud coastal landmark.

This remorseless being, a creature that knew nothing but pure destruction, was only encouraged further by his parents' praises. His parents had hammered it in over and over how it was his imperative as a kaiju to show his dominance over humanity at all times. They always told him about how all too big for anything - too big to live in peace, too big to do anything other than destroy - so what was the point of holding back? No matter what they did, they were never going to feel like they belonged to this world, so why should he show it any mercy?

Toshio would never admit in a million years the envy that burned away at his soul, seeing all of the flashy, fancy lights their cities had, the that he would never get to have. He wanted to tear it all down, grind steel and glass until there was nothing left! That's show them all how much good their "comfort" did them!

That was why, when he'd first gotten that invitation from the Great Kaiju Academy, his first instinct had been to shred it and continue on his way. Out of everything that could have happened next, though, the last thing Toshio expected was mom and dad to actually encourage him to attend. For whatever reason, they said that going to the Academy would actually be good for him, so that he could learn how to be more patient with the tiny cities. Otherwise, before long there wouldn't be any cities left for him to destroy.

It was super-lame, but on the other hand, there were a lot less of the really tall skyscrapers than he was used to seeing lately...

Fine. Maybe he needed a little bit of... what was it called again? It started with an "r" and the end sounded kind of like "ain't"... "restaur-ain't"? Nah, that sounded like one of those places where tinies got food, which sounded stupid to him: there was plenty of food right there in the sea!

Whatever, didn't matter! It was the only reason he decided to attend this stupid school in the first place! He didn't need somebody else to tell him how to be a kaiju or demanding that he make nice with tinies or whatever dumb stuff they went on about! He did just fine by himself!

Still, if he was gonna invited by a place as fancy as the Academy, the least he could do was come along. They had to have all kinds of secret, deadly techniques to make him even more effective as a kaiju! There had to be a reason why everybody seemed to want to go there lately.

It was why found himself standing in front of the Great Kaiju Academy, as he met up with...
