The hum of a motor broke the cacophony of the bird calls, cars passing, and the occasional dog barking one early spring morning as Emily started to used her Rototiller machine to break the soft ground open so that she could start her garden. She had wanted to start a garden ever since she was allowed to live at the house he Dad usually rented out for school. Keeping her ears plugged with her wireless ear buds, Emily kept working to make her dreams of fresh fruits and vegetables a reality. Reaching a point where she felt that it was large enough, she turned it off and looked at her progress. The small plot of land looked ready to reap a bountiful harvest during the summer months. Putting the motorized device aside, Emily took out a metal rake to start breaking apart the larger pieces into much smaller, more manageable pieces. As she was forcing her rake into the ground, she felt a sudden stop and the telltale 'TINK' sound that signified a rock. "Great." She sighed as she propped her rake against the fence and started to dig through the dirt to find the culprit.
As she dug through the dirt, breaking apart pieces to help aid in the search for the mysterious stone. Nearing the location where she heard the sound, she could see something shining a deep red. Using her gardening trowel, Emily worked around where she saw the shining. After about a minute she found that she was holding a small statue about a foot tall and looked to be made of stone, but weighed no more than the gardening trowel that she held in her hand just a moment earlier. Looking at the statue, it looked to have to different faces. One side had a man with a roman looking beard with his eyes having a pair of small rubies. His hair looked to be of Mediterranean decent and curled around his ears and beard. The other side, however, showed a young woman with the same pair of rubies for her eyes and had her hands resting on her lap. Her hair looked to be curled and rested on her shoulders which turned into a roman looking tunic. "What are you?" Emily asked the statue in her hands. Knowing that she would be meeting up with Jenn for their weekly study session, Emily put it to the side and went about finishing up the garden bed.
*** Several Hours Later ***
Pulling up his Jacket, Josh looked over at his girlfriend who was sitting at a picnic table in the park near the school. The slight breeze would normally feel nice on a beautiful day like today, but since it was barely over 50° F, it made it much colder than it actually was. However, sitting in the sun helped warm them up. "So who all was coming today?" Josh asked as he placed a slip of paper in his book so that he wouldn't lose his page.
Looking back over at Jenn, he could see her thinking for a moment. "Oh, I know that Emily will be coming, but Will can't make it." She continued while gesturing her hands with an annoyed manner. "Something to do with meeting up with some class mates to finish up a project for History or some other class." Giving her an odd look, Josh didn't really believe he was doing what he said. Usually when they did a project, Will was the type of person to delegate the tasks and give himself the easiest thing and let the other do the work for him. Something that really irritate Josh and tried his best to get him to do some more work, but nothing really seemed to stick. However, ever since he started dating Emily, Will has started to work a little harder because of how Emily would study and work on her studies. "I really hope he isn't cheating on her with another girl or something like that. Emily would be devastated and would lose the self esteem that she'd gained since her last boyfriend broke up with her because he felt that she was getting too fat during her freshman year of college. This, in turn, caused her go on a strict diet that nearly put her in the hospital and causing her Dad to freak out and almost pulling her out of school" Hearing this, Josh didn't know what to say and decided to keep quiet. "So you can see why I look out for her the way that I do."
Josh didn't know about all that stuff that Emily had gone through when she first started at the university, but was certainly glad that she had somebody like Jenn to help her out. "Sorry, am I late?" A feminine voice called out from behind them causing them both to turn around. Emily looked a little embarrassed at the thought of having to cause her study partners to wait. Dressed in a light purple sweater, a pair of form fitting jean, over her left shoulder, she had her backpack, and seemed to be carrying a small statue in her right hand.
"You didn't keep us waiting." Jenn replied back with a smile and a wave. "We just got here early to get things set up, right sweetie?" Jenn turned over to Josh, who simply nodded his head. Sitting down, Emily placed the idol on the ground just to the right of her and started to get her stuff out and ready to go. Seeing the idol, Jenn couldn't help but ask. "So what's up with that weird thing? Did you get it at some Flea Market or something?"
All three of them looked down at the idol. The small pockmarks that dotted the statue still had dirt within each of them. "Oh, that?" Emily replied gesturing down at the twin headed idol at her side. Both, Josh and Jenn nodded their heads. "I found it while I was getting my garden ready for planting." Picking it up with her right hand, she lifted it up without much effort. "It has some strange writing on it and I can't seem to understand what it is." She turned it upside down so that she could read the bottom much easier. Clearing her throat, she started to read the inscription. "Meum agis tuum et tuum est meum. Donec oculi rubei iterum pleni, manebimus dum sumus. Does anyone know what that means?" She asked, causing the two of them to shake their heads.
"Can I take a look?" Josh asked holding out his hand. Nodding her head, Emily obliged and handed the statue over to him. As soon as the statue touched Josh's hand, a small shock caused both of them to pull their hands back and letting the statue to fall onto the blanket, it's red eyes losing their shine. "Owe!" They both exclaimed.
Note: The translation of the idol if you're wondering is. "Whats mine is yours and whats yours is mine. Until the eyes of red are full again, we will stay as we are."
*** What was swapped between the two of them? *** indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
