"Are you ready to go?" Kim asked her son, who was still getting his shoes on. "The Daniels' Estate Sale is supposed to start soon and I want to see what they've been hiding for all of these years." Josh remembered back about a month prior when the Daniels' had died in a car accident while on their way to the beach. Now their only living relative, a young man around 25, was selling the stuff that they thought were junk or didn't want to keep. They've been known to be recluses in the neighborhood ever since Josh and his family moved in nearly 10 years prior. "Are you ready?" She asked as Josh nodded and walked with her down the street to the Daniels' residence.
Since it was only a few houses down from where they lived and the beautiful weather certainly helped make the walk enjoyable. Before they knew it the house was in view. Several of their neighbors had the same idea and were already looking around the place. Seeing that they've come to the sale, a middle aged man with sculpted eyebrows and a 3 day old beard came up to them. The way that he was rubbing his hands together reminded Josh of a weasel about to raid a nest. "Ah, welcome." He replied with a weaselly smile. "Can I help you with anything or would you like to look around for the time being?"
Getting weird vibes from the guy, Kim quickly answered. "I think we're going to look around." Seeming to like the answer, the weaselly guy nodded his head and motioned for them to head inside. As soon as they were far enough away, Kim whispered to Josh. "He give me the creeps." She held up her arm to show the goosebumps that were running up her arm. Making their way up the steps, Josh and Kim soon stepped into what appeared to be another world. The walls looked to have the wood paneling that was popular in the 70s and 80s, but the carpet looked to be the shag type and was an obnoxious looking pistachio color. "Talk about tacky." Kim giggled as she looked around. Everything seemed to have a price tag hanging from it, but most of it looked to have SOLD already written on the tag.
"Looks like everything has already been picked through." Josh lamented as they turned into the living room. This room seemed to have been stuck in the 50s. A large television set with a small screen sat against the wall with several vases on the top of it. The teal colored couch looked well preserved and appeared to have never been touched or sat on. Behind it, hanging on the wall, was a clock that resembled the sun. Long pieces of metal coming out of the center and a small circle of numbers were at the center with the arms of the clock steadily moving around.
They continued to look through the house, but soon found themselves in the garage. Each room looked to be taken out of another time, but nothing seemed to catch their interest. As they entered the garage, Kim started to look around and found an old steamer trunk. The aged wood appeared to be kept in place by the metal bangs that went around the trunk. The old metal rivets looked to be worn, but still doing their function and holding the metal bands in place. "I really like this." Kim stated as she got a closer look at the trunk. Attempting to open it up, the lock seemed to have rusted shut many decades prior and didn't seem to want to give up the secret of its contents just yet. Looking back at her son, Kim's eyes looked to be glistening, almost as if she was on the verge of tears. "I had one chest like it when I stayed at my Grandmother's house as a little girl. She told me that a young lady should put her hopes and dreams into it. But later found out that was incorrect." She smiled as if remembering good times.
"Ah, I see that you've found something." The weaselly man stated as he came around the corner of the garage. "I do believe the owner is looking to get $100 for that chest, since he doesn't have the key to get into it." Hearing the price, Kim quickly got the money out of her purse. Seeing how energetic she seemed to have it, the weaselly man quickly took the money. As he did, Kim couldn't help but feel how damp and sweaty his hands felt. It took everything in her to not wipe her hands on her jeans and pull away in disgust. Counting the money that he'd been given, the man quickly wrote SOLD on the tag. "Now then, would you like help loading it up?"
Hearing this, Kim and Josh both looked at each other. "Uh, we walked here." She told him while glancing down at the trunk. "You don't think it will be a problem, do you? We only live a couple houses away."
Looking at the trunk, the man shook his head. "I believe it weighs a little over 100 pounds, but if they two of you use the handles it should be fine."
This seemed to be what Kim was wanting to hear the most. She eagerly grabbed Josh's arm and brought him over to the trunk. "Come on honey. You grab that end and I will grab this one." Hoping to get it home soon, Josh did as he was asked and they started to make their way home. With the both of them sharing the burden, it didn't seem to weigh too much, but Josh could certainly tell that it had something inside. With each step they took, something seemed to move around inside the trunk.
"Its not too bad." Josh said as they started to walk up the driveway to their home. The garage was already open since Kim was anticipating buying something, just nothing too big. "Did you want to bring it in here so we can get the lock opened?" He asked while gesturing towards the garage.
Nodding her head, Kim motioned to the work bench that had come with the house. "Just set it right there and I will see about getting it open. Thanks again sweetie for helping me bring it over." Waving it off as nothing, he headed back inside to get ready for his date with Jenn. Looking at the lock, she tried to think of what her Dad would suggest. 'A drill?' She thought as she found it in the drawer. 'I remember seeing my Dad doing that once when he bought something with a lock on it.' Grabbing a pair of work gloves and a pair of safety glasses, she got to work drilling out the lock. After a couple of attempts, she had some success. Brushing away some of the metal shavings that came with drilling out the lock, Kim smiled when she knew that she was able to get the lock drilled out and perhaps get the trunk open to see what was on the inside. As she opened the lid of the trunk, she felt her heart rate increase with the anticipation of what she was going to find on the inside.
