Ash walks towards Route 1 and sees Jenny and Joy there, ready to greet him. Jenny is now sporting a jean jacket with a cool green shirt, dark blue pants, black leather boots, and two green bracelets on her wrist to replace her gloves. Joy’s design hasn’t changed much, but she's wearing a more revealing outfit. Her top is now exposed except for under her breasts and nipples, her skirt is very short, and the back of her hair is raised higher. However, what catches Ash's attention the most is Joy's white and pink heart-topped metal pole on her back.
"Jenny! Joy! I thought we were meeting at the Inn," Ash says.
"We know, but we couldn't wait that long for you," Jenny replies.
"Besides, there's still daylight. We can probably make it to Viridian City before dark," Joy adds.
Ash turns to Joy. "Good point, but Joy, what's that on your back?"
"Oh, this?" Joy says, brandishing the staff. "While studying rejuvenators, I decided to create a portable one. It's not perfected yet, but it should be useful now."
"You made that yourself?" Jenny asks, surprised.
"I had plenty of free time. And unlike the rejuvenator, this staff can only heal one Pokémon at a time. It also needs recharging, which can take up to two hours. But I'm sure we'll find a way to pass the time," Joy says, giving Ash a meaningful look. Jenny also gives him a similar look, making Ash blush.
"(chuckles nervously) We'll focus on that when we get to it," Ash says.
"Eevee," Eevee comments, shaking his head.
Joy notices the Eevee on Ash's shoulder. "Aww, aren't you adorable," she says, reaching out to pet Eevee, who evolves into Jolteon and dashes away. "Oh, that's interesting. Was he mistreated?"
"Yes, Team Rocket experimented on him," Ash explains.
"Oh," Joy responds sadly. "I'm sorry, Eevee. I didn't mean to stress you out."
Jenny looks down and grumbles before kicking a rock away. "Damn it!"
"It's okay, Jenny. You didn't know," Ash reassures her.
Jenny gives Ash a small smile, then turns somber again. "It's not that. My family has been trying to stop Team Rocket for years. We thought they were only selling Pokémon, but now... we need to stop them, no matter what."
Jolteon, moved by Joy's kindness and Jenny's sense of justice, devolves and returns to Ash's side.
Ash nods. "We will, but we need to get going for now."
"Right," Jenny concurs.
"Lead the way," Joy chimes in.
Thus, Ash, Jenny, Joy, and Vee continue their journey down Route 1 towards Viridian City.
