'The Iron Throne is mine by right. All those that deny are my foes' had been what Stannis had said to his brother when they met. He denied his throne. Not all to strange, there was no love between the Baratheon brothers. It didn't matter now. Stannis laid wounded on the shores of an island after the battle of blackwaterbay. The battle had been a disaster thanks to the wildfire tricks the dwarf had played. The lack of his brothers forces, and Lord Tywins reinforcements, turned what had to be Stannis battle of the Trident into his downfall. No more ships, no more men. Stannis wondered if he made the right decisions. Claiming the throne was not among these, it was his right as oldest brother after Robert. The Lannister children were made of incest and no Baratheons at all. Stannis wondered if his decision not to kill Renly by means of magic had been the right one. The red priestess had offered to do as much. It might have given him more troops, ships and support from the Stormlands. But there was no honor in becoming a kinslayer. Renly would bend the knee eventually. It didn't matter now, the end was near for Stannis.
The sun was about to set and Stannis closed his eyes, accepting his faith. One less stag to play the game.
Before he closed his eyes however he saw out of the corner of his eye a figure approaching. 'Davos? Is that you' Stannis called out. Was this not the end?
'The night is dark and full of terrors, my king'
It was the voice of the Red priestess, Melisandre.
'End my terrors then, I suffer them all the same. I have become a page in someone else's history book.' Stannis scoffed at the sentence he had heard a thousand times. Stannis never fully believed in the mutterings of the red lady, there was power to be sure, but not enough to press his claim.
'Your story is not at an end my king. The Lord of Light commands it. While your flesh and blood might not be able to press the claim and win the throne for the lord there is still power in a king's blood, and in no one does it run more deep than in the veins in the one true king of Westeros.' She continued in her cryptic ways.
Blood from Stannis wounds slowly made it to the shoreline. Once the first stream of blood was washed out by the oncoming waves, the waves themselves suddenly erupted into fire. This spread until a circle of fire was formed around the island.
'The Lord of Light is not done with you, my king. You will continue the royal line.'
'Woman, I'm dying here like my brother Robert did before me. I wont even make it through the night.' Stannis said coughing up blood.
The red woman continued her preaching and chanting. The fires washed ashore as waves and Stannis could only feel the heat. Heat, like the sun in Dorne, or the Red keep in summer.
'We will meet again' was the last thing Stannis heard the Red woman say in the common tongue before he closed his eyes.
But before long there were sounds again. It sounded like...
