Adrian Reynolds had no idea how his life had gotten this way. In school, he showed promise in biology, eventually getting a Masters degree with a multitude of jobs lined up. But then, for one reason or another, he got turned away or fired, whether it be for hearsay from employees, a single use of raised tone, or even—at his most recent job—having to choose between coming in sick or getting sacked. All because he cared about his fellow employees, he now found himself unemployed again, with absolutely no further opportunities that he could find. And with rent coming up, Adrian was worried he'd have to start selling his family heirlooms, like a valuable pendant that had been in his family for generations.
A pendant that Adrian was currently fiddling with, as he once again scrolled through his usual job-hunting site—no luck, like last week, or the week before. He sighed, pushing his chair away and leaning back, staring lazily at the ceiling. "Man, this sucks," he groaned to no one in particular, still fiddling with a slowly-warming piece of neckwear. "Having my future decided by the whims of some greedy boss... I wish I could go someplace where I would be cared for, someplace where I wouldn't need to worry about money... Someplace beautiful, with beautiful people, heck, I wish I could find someone to call the love of my life! Maybe someone who shares my same interests and—Eh!?"
It wasn't until it was nearly blinding that Adrian realized his pendant now had a glow around it, and he barely had time to shield his eyes with his free hand! When the glow died down, he lowered it, looking around to see...
