My mind was scrambling I tried to look for a weapon, but all I found was my box cutter that I used to open boxes at work, I killed before, but only when I was out hunting with my dad, the monster drew closer I didn’t know what else to do. I thought about running, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to outrun it.
1 day earlier.
I walked along the path of the forest, school had just been let out, and everyone was away for summer vacation, as my mind wandered of what to do for summer I thought about hanging out with my best friend Alex, suddenly I heard something, it sounded like an MP3 player going off in the distance, as I made my way through the thick brush I found a strange device beeping and going off once I picked it up it shut off couldn’t even get it open,
(“Maybe it needs to be recharged”) I thought to myself, I put it in my pocket without thinking of it anymore and headed on home, by the time I got home, Catalina was waiting for me, she had become sort of a surrogate grandmother since her own children and grandchildren were forced to stay behind in their home country to defend their home..
“You should be careful“ Catalina said her voice doing that typical grandmotherly fashion, “it’s not as safe as it once was when I was a child, besides your mother and I do worry about you”
“I know grandmother, don’t worry I’m usually careful” I said, Catalina, then brushed off my coat and handed me a bag of coffee for my mom, my mom just got out of surgery a few days prior and my dad was on the road for his truck business so everything relied on me to help take over, Catalina would often come over and help my mother and me out, Catalina was Ukrainian, I always referred to her as grandmother which seemingly made her happy, I guess seeing me and my mom made her think about her own child and grandchild who were forced to stay behind and fight against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as I walked inside, I took off my coat and threw my backpack in my room and then plug the device into my laptop, waiting for it to charge up and then walked into the kitchen to get dinner prepared, I wasn’t a gourmet chef, but I could prepare a few meals, mac & cheese for one, as I got the water boiling, I prepared two bowls for me and mom, after dinner I cleaned the dishes and went into my room to play some video games.
The next day.
I got up and did my morning routine basically brush, my teeth, have a shower and get dressed, then I went outside (I grabbed the device I found last night believing it was fully charged) I had organized a meet up place with my friend Alex we would go to the arcade and then go bowling later that day, I saw Catalina standing outside talking to her friend Alice Catalina walked up to me and started fixing my collar, she did this every morning, and I never mind it, It reminded me a lot of my own grandmother who passed away when I was young,
“You are very smart and responsible for your age” Catalina said with a smile on her face, I smiled back as she finished fixing my collar and zipping up my hoodie,
“Thanks, grandmother, don’t worry I’ll be back before dark” Catalina smiled, then gave me a hug.
“You remind me a lot of my son, so bright and responsible. I wish he was here”
“As do I grandmother” Catalina gave me a kiss on the cheek, then went back to talking to Alice, after about an hour of walking, I sat down on a park bench waiting for my friend Alex.
“You’re earlier than expected” I heard someone say, I tilted my head towards the sound and saw Alex waving at me, I waved back, after our greetings we went to the arcade then went bowling by the time we were finished it was around 3:30 in the afternoon, just as I was about to leave for home the device in my pocket started beeping. I pulled it out to look at it there was a light on there flashing Alex looked at it too.
“What is this thing some sort of MP3 player?“ I looked at him and shrugged.
“I’m not sure I found it yesterday. At first. I thought it was some kind of portable gaming device, I thought I’d show you but I forgot to do so” the device began to flash even brighter Alex and I had to cover our eyes then a bright flash came out and everything went dark.
I woke up to it felt like a few hours later. I stood up, looking around for Alex, but couldn’t see him. I called out for him. No answer. I tried to call him on my smart phone again no answer and no signal, that’s when I took notice of everything around me. It was covered in large plants. Nothing like I’ve ever seen before. It felt like the forest but different somehow I then looked up at the sky, expecting to see the sun, but didn’t see it, but somehow it was daytime, suddenly I heard something from behind me I turned around and saw what looked like a monster my mind was scrambling I tried to look for a weapon, but all I found was my box cutter that I used to open boxes at work, I killed before, but only when I was out hunting with my dad, the monster drew closer I didn’t know what else to do.
