The year was 1984. You were visiting your friend Billy Peltzer on what you thought was just going to be a typical December night in Kingston Falls.
Billy was the son of eccentric but lovable local inventor Randall "Rand" Peltzer. Billy was excited to show you the new pet Rand had just given him as a gift. You were a little confused when Billy dimmed the lights first.
"It's okay, Greta," he whispered softly. "You can come out now."
Slowly, the tiny creature crawled out from under Billy's bed and climbed up on top of it. You'd been expecting maybe another dog like Billy's current pet, Barney. Instead, this was a creature unlike any you'd ever seen before.
She was a fuzzy little thing, covered in white and fawn-colored patches of fur. She had long, pointy ears. White, almost platinum, hair, human-like compared to the rest of her animal-like fur, came down to her shoulders and curled up a little at the ends. Her eyes were surrounded by long, dark lashes and sparkly purple eye shadow. Her lips were weirdly human-like, thick and full and absolutely slathered with shiny red lipstick. There was a prominent beauty mark at the corner of her mouth.
"She keeps getting into my mom's make-up," Billy said. "I don't think it hurts her at all. She seems to like it. My dad named her Greta, because she reminds him of his favorite actress Greta Garbo."
"What is she?" you asked.
"Dad says she's a 'Mogwai.'"
"I've never heard of any Mogwai before."
"Me neither," Billy said. "But she comes with very important rules. Keep her out of bright light. It can hurt her, and especially sunlight can kill her. Don't get her wet. And most importantly, never feed her after midnight."
The little fuzzball made a trilling noise that sounded like she was humming a Gershwin number. Then she surprised you by climbing into your lap. As she continued cooing her song, she looked up at you, batting her lashes and rubbing herself against you.
"That's funny," Billy said. "She's usually so shy but she seems to really like you."
Perhaps a little too much, you thought as the Greta Mogwai kept awkwardly rubbing her body up against yours.
