Dawn was out helping Professor Rowan with his research and checking out Lake Verity. After several hours, she was practically exhausted.
When done with a complete search, she returned to Rowan. "Professor, there isn't anything out of the ordinary on the other side, either."
Professor Rowan looked out over the lake. "Hmm... I may have been mistaken... Something appears to be different than it was before, but..." He looked at Dawn and realised how late it was. "Fine. It's enough that we have seen the lake. Dawn, we're leaving."
As they were leaving, they had to ask two people, who Dawn recognised as Lucas and Barry, to move out of their way.
"Professor," Dawn said on their way back, "how are you enjoying being back in Sinnoh?"
He thought over his response. "...Hm. There is one thing I can say. There are many rare kinds of Pokémon in Sinnoh. The region should serve us very well in regards to our studies."
Just as they got back to the lab, Dawn realised neither of them had his briefcase. Making an excuse, she rushed back to the lake and grabbed it. But was in such a hurry, she didn't notice the missing pokéballs.
The next morning, Dawn discovered a pokéflute she didn't remember finding. Regardless, she put it in her bag.
She returned to work to find Rowan not looking happy. When he revealed the single pokéball, she remembered Lucas and Barry. Rowan went to collect Barry while Dawn went for Lucas.
After meeting him, she told him the professor wanted to see him.
By the time they got back, Barry was already there and panicking. She asked Lucas for the pokéball and returned it to Rowan, giving him privacy.
After a minute, he asked her to bring in the two.
He spoke to them about how well cared for the pokémon were and allowed the two to keep them.
After they left, Rowan walked up to her with the last pokéball. "Dawn, you've been a wonderful assistant these past few years. Therefore, it would be wrong of me to hold you back from your own journey."
He handed her her partner and she thanked him profusely for letting her do this.
