Torchic jumped and scratched a Poochyena, causing them to back off and run away.
Prof. Birch climbed down and embraced May. "I'm OK, May. They were just trying to scare me." He then noticed Brendan. "You must be Norman's boy, thank you for the help. Why don't we continue this at my lab?"
Back at the lab, Birch offered him to keep Torchic as thanks, which he accepted. Brendan then made his way out.
May turned to her father as he left. "Dad, I know I'm supposed to wait but do you think I could pick my pokémon now?"
He realised that there was no point in saying no, so she grabbed Mudkip and ran after Brendan.
"Hey Brendan!"
He stopped in his tracks and turned towards her.
"I was wondering, since we both have our first pokémon, you want a friendly spar?"
He accepted and they went back to Route 101 for some space.
