The Waiting Game

by: Michael Clayton Author IconMail Icon
Tyler pressed his back against the cool surface of the pebble, his breath shallow and his heart pounding in his chest. He knew it was risky, but something inside him urged him to stay hidden and wait. Patience, after all, had served him well in the past. There was no telling what was approaching, and he didn’t want to risk drawing attention to himself.

The rustling grew louder, a soft scrape against the sand that echoed in the still air. Tyler’s mind raced with possibilities. It could be a harmless breeze stirring the brush—or it could be something far more dangerous, prowling through the camp in search of prey.

The shadows around him deepened as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, jagged lines across the landscape. From his vantage point, the world seemed even more foreboding in the twilight. The camp, once bustling with the energy of exploration, now felt desolate and eerie. Every small movement sent a shiver down his spine, but he stayed still, determined to let whatever it was pass by unnoticed.

Suddenly, a shape emerged from the underbrush—small and sleek, yet massive from Tyler’s tiny perspective. It was a lizard, its beady eyes scanning the ground as its tongue flicked in and out, tasting the air. Its leathery skin shimmered faintly in the dim light, and Tyler watched in awe and fear as the creature crept closer, its body moving with a slow, deliberate grace.

To the lizard, Tyler was little more than a speck of dust on the ground—a potential meal, or worse, something to trample without even noticing. Tyler’s body tensed as the massive reptile inched forward, its head swaying slightly as it searched for food. He held his breath, willing himself to be as still and silent as possible.

The lizard’s tongue flicked out, brushing against the pebble Tyler hid behind. The slight vibration of its touch traveled through the ground, sending a tremor through Tyler’s body. His heart raced, but he stayed rooted to the spot, hoping against hope that the creature would move on.

For what felt like an eternity, the lizard lingered, its head turning slightly as it sniffed the air. Then, with a flick of its tail, it turned away, losing interest. Tyler watched in silent relief as the lizard crawled back toward the underbrush, disappearing into the desert once again.

He let out a shaky breath, his muscles relaxing as the tension slowly ebbed away. He had made the right choice—staying hidden had kept him safe, at least for now. But the encounter had reminded him just how vulnerable he was in this strange new world.

As he emerged from behind the pebble, Tyler took stock of his surroundings once more. The camp was quiet, save for the soft whisper of the wind. Kai was still out, likely on his way to consult the elders about Tyler’s strange transformation. But Tyler knew he couldn’t just sit around waiting for Kai to return. He had to keep moving, keep exploring, if he was going to find answers.

His eyes wandered back to the shiny object half-buried in the sand. Now that the immediate danger had passed, the mysterious glint caught his attention once more. It seemed almost out of place in this vast desert—too metallic, too pristine, to be a mere piece of debris. What if it was connected to the kiva’s magic? What if it held a clue to his transformation?

Tyler weighed his options again. He could investigate the shiny object, or he could stick to Kai’s plan and head for the backpack, hoping to find something useful there. The lizard had reminded him of the dangers of the desert, but it had also stirred something else—a sense of adventure, a feeling that there was more to discover if he was brave enough to take the risk.

The camp, though vast and quiet, was not without its secrets. And Tyler knew that if he was going to survive this ordeal, he needed to unravel those mysteries before they unraveled him.
