Sacred Lands

by: Michael Clayton Author IconMail Icon
Tyler Johnson felt a pull toward the stories of the American Southwest, where the spirits of the earth and sky held powerful magic. His mind was filled with images of vast deserts, towering mesas, and ancient rituals performed under the watchful eye of the sun. The tales of shamans who could commune with the spirits and the legends of powerful beings who once roamed these lands fascinated him. This was where he would begin.

After arriving in a small, remote town near the canyon, Tyler arranged to meet with a local guide, a young man named Kai. Tyler found him waiting outside a modest diner, his figure standing tall and confident under the bright desert sun.

Kai was in his late twenties, with a lean, athletic build that spoke of his familiarity with the rugged terrain. His skin was a deep bronze, tanned from years in the sun. He wore a weathered leather jacket over a simple t-shirt, practical cargo pants, and sturdy hiking boots. His dark hair was short and tousled, and his sharp, observant eyes, the color of molten amber, seemed to take in everything around him. A beaded necklace adorned his neck, a nod to his heritage, and a silver earring gleamed in his left ear.

"Mr. Johnson," Kai greeted with a friendly nod and a firm handshake. "I've heard you're looking for the old kiva."

"Yes," Tyler replied. "I've read about its significance and would like to see it for myself. I've heard it holds great spiritual power."

Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly as he assessed Tyler. "The kiva is not just a place; it’s a powerful site. The spirits guard it closely. Are you prepared for what you might encounter?"

Tyler nodded earnestly. "I am. I just want to understand the history and the power of this place."

Kai gave a thoughtful nod. "Alright. We'll leave at dawn. Follow me closely, and show respect to the land and the spirits."

The next morning, as the sun began to cast its golden light over the desert, Tyler and Kai set out. The journey took them through rugged terrain, across dry riverbeds, and over rocky outcrops. Kai moved with a surefooted ease, expertly navigating the landscape with a blend of familiarity and confidence. Tyler struggled to keep pace, but Kai’s effortless stride made it clear he was right at home in this environment.

As they approached the canyon, the towering mesas and red rock formations created a stunning and formidable backdrop. Kai led Tyler to a hidden path that wound down into the canyon. The descent was steep, but Kai’s guidance was steady and reassuring.

After a long hike, they finally arrived at the entrance to the kiva, partially obscured by overgrown vegetation. The entrance was marked by a simple stone doorway, its surface etched with ancient symbols.

"This is as far as I go," Kai said, his voice low and respectful. "The kiva is a place for you to enter alone. The spirits will test your intentions. Show respect, and you will be safe."

Tyler thanked Kai and watched as he carefully retraced his steps, disappearing into the desert as the sun climbed higher. Taking a deep breath, Tyler approached the kiva. He brushed away the sand covering the carvings and prepared to step inside.

As he entered the kiva, the air grew cooler, and the atmosphere shifted. The interior was lined with carvings that seemed to glow faintly in the dim light. In the center of the chamber was a large, circular stone, its surface polished and inviting.

Tyler approached the stone and placed his hands on its smooth surface. The moment he touched it, a low, humming sound filled the chamber. The air around him grew thick with energy, and he felt the ground shift beneath his feet.

Before Tyler could react, the floor of the kiva gave way, and he was plunged into darkness. He fell for what felt like an eternity, the air rushing past him, until he landed softly on a bed of sand. He sat up, disoriented, and looked around.

To his astonishment, Tyler was now only 1/8 inch tall—about the size of a small grain of rice. The once-familiar world around him had become a vast and overwhelming landscape. The towering mesas that had once seemed distant now loomed above him like colossal cliffs, and the cacti, which were now the size of enormous skyscrapers, cast massive, looming shadows over the ground.

For perspective, a single pebble at his feet was now the size of a boulder, and the crevices in the canyon walls were deep canyons to him. Even the grains of sand were larger than he was, making him feel like a mere speck in an unfathomable world.

Tyler’s heart raced as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. As he scanned the area, he noticed a familiar figure moving in the distance—Kai. The guide had apparently returned to the canyon. From Tyler’s tiny perspective, Kai appeared as a towering giant, his movements slow and deliberate.
