“Pssssttt…Wake up, it’s time,” Bailey whispered, gently nudging Kaitlyn. She was a slender girl with fair skin and jet-black hair, dressed in a tank top and flannel pajama pants. A large, leather-bound book was slung underneath her right arm, its worn cover hinting at centuries of secrets. Her striking blue eyes showed a glint of annoyance as she tried to rouse her friend from slumber.
“I’m up, I’m up,” Kaitlyn mumbled, yawning and pushing her wavy blond hair out of her face. She tumbled off the air mattress and stood up, stretching her arms above her head. Dressed in shorts and an oversized t-shirt, she rubbed her eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. The room was dimly lit by the soft glow of a nightlight, casting long shadows on the walls.
“Shhhhh!” Bailey hushed, her voice barely above a whisper. “We don’t want to wake up Penelope or it’ll ruin the prank.”
“Right, right,” Kaitlyn whispered, regaining her senses. A mischievous smile appeared across her face. “So you really think this is going to work?” Kaitlyn asked, her voice tinged with excitement and a hint of skepticism.
“I think so, my grandma said it would,” Bailey answered, her voice filled with a mix of confidence and uncertainty. “Come on, follow me.”
“This is going to be so awesome,” Kaitlyn whispered in an excited tone, as they quietly padded out to the living room. “Totally going to get her back for telling the whole school that I kissed Noah Wheeler.” She added, a playful grin spreading across her face. The wooden floor creaked softly under their bare feet, the only sound in the otherwise silent house.
Once they reached the living room, the two girls sat cross-legged on the floor facing each other. Bailey put the book in front of her with a thud, the sound echoing through the quiet house. She began leafing through the pages, her fingers tracing the ancient symbols and words. The scent of old parchment and dust filled the air, adding to the mystique of the moment.
“Here it is, Simple Body Swap Incantation,” she read aloud, her voice barely above a whisper. She looked up at Kaitlyn, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “Do you have the stuff?”
“Oh yeah,” Kaitlyn said, leaning over and reaching into her shorts pocket. She fished out two objects, her movements careful and deliberate. “Violet’s chapstick,” she said, placing it in front of herself. The tube of lip balm was a bright pink, the cap slightly worn from use. “And David’s spoon he used at dinner,” she added, placing the spoon in front of Bailey.
“Perfect,” Bailey said with a grin, her excitement palpable. “Ok, you ready?”
“So ready,” Kaitlyn smiled, her heart pounding with anticipation.
“Ok, grab hold of your object and close your eyes,” Bailey instructed, her voice steady and focused.
Kaitlyn clutched the chapstick in her hand and closed her eyes as instructed. Bailey likewise took the spoon in her hand. She then began to mutter some words in Latin, the ancient language filling the room with a sense of mystery and power. The air seemed to crackle with energy, and the scent of ozone filled the room.
Upon the last word of the spell, everything went bright and then pitch black. The two girls collapsed to the floor, asleep. The room fell silent, the only sound the soft ticking of a clock in the distance.  indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
