Chapter #2

Seek humanity outside of your apartment

    by: NVR Author IconMail Icon
The first thought in your mind is to put your ant sized body to the test and reach that bag of chips on the floor, the most straightforward adventure you can think of. You walk to the edge of the couch, realize the threads provide some sort of net that you could use to climb down safely and smile with disbelief, wondering if every surface would be like this or if you just got lucky.

It's a long trip, and you also have to move towards one of the legs of the couch in order to avoid making a jump you were not confident on doing, but after 10 or so minutes you finally reach the floor. A sense of silly pride comes quickly over you, it was the more interesting thing that has happened you in a while already, but it quickly gives way to other, less positive feelings as you walk slowly towards that giant bag, noticing stains and dust along the way that make your familiar apartment floor unrecognizable at times.

What were you thinking? You could have had it all! You could have wished for the power to change size, for the power to change reality even, for infinite wishes, or just to fix your life and have it the way you wanted: successful, safe, happy. The excuses you have for yourself are quite valid, no way on earth you could predict Cthulhu actually existed, or that your wish would actually be granted, or that it would be granted for the price of about a six pack of cheap beer. It didn't matter, it still hurts, the opportunity wasted. You wonder if you can just make another donation and ask for a better wish, the idea makes you laugh. Maybe if Cthulhu can be summoned with less than five dollars, the remaining savings in your account.

After another 5 minutes you're finally there, the bag of chips looming over you, but there's no sense of pride this time. It feels hollow, and you know why. You can't help but look at the door, at the dangerous world out there, but it's what you want. Your wish isn't complete, in a way. Cthulhu did its part, you have to do the rest.

Another long trip, with fear and excitement slowly rising with every step. Being ant sized was interesting, but to complete your wish you needed other humans, being ant sized around them, living with them. The scenarios that flood your mind make you forget about Josh, about your landlord, about your job, about your past life: Kept as a pet, evading giant threats, living off crumbs, spying at your heart's content, being at the mercy of a giant human, or live with them completely unaware of your existence. Every path is full of possibilities only you can explore.

Getting closer and closer, you ground yourself a bit and think about your options, your neighbors are a single mother with her teenage child, a college student that is trying to survive with a measly part time job and a grumpy elderly woman that lived with her cats. You stop for a moment trying to decide your path, you could always go to the street and just try to follow the first person you came across, it sounded fitting considered all that happened but it also seemed way too dangerous.

What happens next?
