Chapter #2

The Chang Effect

    by: Dex Author IconMail Icon
Rebecca Chang was a smart woman. In her almost three decades of life, she'd been through a lot. She had been following the Willamette Incident, and now the the Vegas outbreak - Quite closely.

She got a tip about a unique prototype device from a rogue Phenotrans professor, among many other things about a prototype device. What it did however, that she didn't know. What she did know was that this was about to change everything. She knew it. She was even given a spare ID card to enter the facility. This was time to diguise. She'd done this a few times before; Something she learned when she was freelance. It was so much easier to get information out of someone when you were someone else...

She used an unmarked van to drive to the facility; it was located just outside of Fortune city. It was a large, Black structure. It was surrounded by sandy dunes, perfectly away from human civilization, but close enough to not be remote. Rebecca heard many rumours about these places; human experimentation, genome tampering, even human augmentations. She entered the facility and swiped her ID card... it took a few horrifying seconds to register; she wondered for a second if she'd been betrayed. The device was located in the prototype wing of the facility; she thought that was odd, as the Scientist had described it as a weapon...

There it was. The prototype Phenotrans device. Propped up in a polymer casing on top of an obsidian pillar. Phenotrans sure liked its showmanship...
It was almost alien in design. Crimson and sleek with no reflective surfaces. In her disguise no one would shift an eye if she examined it. She walked up to the pedestal and picked it up; it was slightly heavier than she thought it would be, but it was portable enough. At least, to get it out of the facility. Rebecca quickly sheathed it into her large coat pocket and made her way to the elevator...

"Excuse me!" A large man in a black suit called out to her. Rebecca froze. She didn't bring any weapons sans the one she just stole... "Y...Yes? She feigned awkwardness. "Ma'am, there's a radiation leak in the preceding wing. All civilians must be evacuated immediately." "Oh, o-okay!" Rebecca said. How lucky, almost as if said leak was planned... she had thought of how to escape with the prototype, but now she didn't need to; She even had an escort. She quickly thanked the man and went on her way.

"Close call..." Rebecca said, sweat dripping from her forehead. One more close call like that and she could say goodbye to any scoops... Rebecca made her way back to the bunker. Chuck, Stacey and Katey were waiting for her.

"Here it is!" She lifted it up in front of everyone. "So... what does it do?" Stacey said, her eyebrow raising curiously. "No idea! But that's what we're gonna find out. Maybe it's a weapon? We just point it and something and... pow! How about we try it out now?" Rebecca said. Chuck shook his head. "No time. There are people out there that need saving, Rebecca. It can wait 'til tomorrow. I've got a lead on some Zombrex too." Chuck said, half-way out the door.

Later that night, Rebecca toyed around with the idea of using the device. Surely it wasn't a weapon. It barely even looked like one. It certainly didn't look like any firearm she'd used, and she'd seen plenty in her time. She recalled the instructions. "Hold the trigger down for three seconds, and..."

A hellish red flash engulfed the room, and everything went black...

Who did Rebecca think about?
