Chapter #2

Is This a Job Interview?

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
As Gabby took a sip of her coffee, Mike asked, "How does this usually go?"

Is he serious? Gabby thought. "Usually, you ask me about my name and references."

"Oh. Okay. What's your name?"

"My full name is Gabriella Maria Consuela Gutierrez Ortiz; but most people call me Gabby."

"Alright, Gabby. How soon can you start?"

"I'm available as soon as possible. I'm afraid I don't have any good references."

Mike didn't seem to react one way or another to this. "I should tell you that your duties here... might be a bit different than what you're used to."

"I'm used to dealing with difficult people. You'll find me quite patient with customers. You're not concerned about my references?"

"We all have to start somewhere, I suppose. The ad didn't mention experience, after all. But it's not just the difficult that you'll be dealing with. People who come here bring their problems with them."

Gabby looked around. "That doesn't seem to be a big problem. You've really never conducted a job interview before, have you?"

"Excuse me," he said, and walked to the back.

"Don't mind him," said a voice.

Gabby looked up, and saw the cook in the kitchen. The cook looked male, but was wearing hoop earrings. "He acts like he's from another planet."

"Mike's not a bad guy. He just gets weirded out when he doesn't know how to deal with something. He's great with the customers, but I think that ad threw him. He honestly doesn't know how that got there."

"How did you start working here?"

"I just showed up a couple years ago. The name's Ed, by the way. My dad didn't like it when I told him I wasn't like other guys." He pointed to his left eye. "I didn't have makeup to hide his parting gift to me."

Gabby gingerly touched her eye. "My ex. My dad is in prison; my mom... is in a better place. I decided not to let history repeat itself."

Ed nodded. "Glad you're out of that situation. I hope, whatever you decide, everything works out for you."
