This choice: Cell  •  Go Back...
Chapter #4

Cell, the obsession with perfection.

by: Winnie the Pooh Author IconMail Icon
Cell is a being created by Doctor Gero using the cells of the strongest warriors.
His goal? To reach the perfect form, at any cost.

Each evolution makes him more powerful, but also more arrogant and ruthless. His obsession with perfection. for perfection pushes him to destroy everything that stands in his way (analogy with the human being.)

Initially, Toriyama had not planned Cell as the main antagonist. After the criticism of his former editor, who considered the previous enemies unconvincing, Toriyama introduced Cell to meet his expectations.

The name Cell can be interpreted in 2 ways.
1. Cell: biological being formed by warrior cells.
2. Cell: a prison of power, trapped in the desire for perfection.

Nietzsche wrote: "he who fights against monsters must be careful not to become a monster himself."
In his obsession to become perfect, Cell transforms into a ruthless creature. The constant search for perfection can literally make us sick, leaving us with resentment and remorse.

Cell is not a villain by choice. His search for perfection is written in his genes and Saiyan cells. Like a predator, he follows his instincts. He must become the strongest. And his need for perfection isolates him emotionally. During the fight with Gohan, rather than accept defeat, he self-destructs by trying to take with him what surrounds him (apostosis.)

Cell is a victim of his own nature. How many times do we try to be perfect only to discover that the closer we get to our ideal, the more empty we feel? Just like Cell, we often feel trapped in the search for perfection. We want to start a project, but we remain blocked at the first step if everything is not perfect.

It is as if we always feel incomplete, just like Cell before reaching his final form. He can't accept himself in his intermediate forms, just like those who wait for the ideal moment to launch into a project. Spoiler: that moment will never come.

Every great undertaking began imperfectly. Today we are so poisoned by the idea of perfection that we fail even before starting, forgetting that what we see is only the tip of the iceberg, let the world see your imperfections too.

Personally, I find Cell to be a villain who is difficult to appreciate if you don't understand him. He embodies all the personalities of the Z Warriors and for this reason he inevitably contradicts himself: he is pure evil like Freezer, yet he spares Trunks and organizes a tournament to have fun like Goku himself would have done. He lets Gohan go beyond his limits because, like Vegeta, he arrogantly underestimates his opponent. And despite this stupid mistake, he is a rational being capable of executing his plans with precision, like Junior. He ends up not having a precise goal because he has multiple ones: he wants to dominate the Universe and exterminate everyone, but at the same time he has the pretension of finding opponents capable of defeating him, stronger than him, although this leads him to a deep desperation that ends with his self-destruction because he does not accept defeat.

THE END.
