Leorio at first seems like a frivolous man, interested only in money, but we soon discover that his true dream is to become a doctor to cure people without money being an obstacle. He lost a friend to an illness, and since then he decided that he would make a difference.
The problem? Studying medicine costs too much, and he can't afford it. That's why he takes the exam to become a Hunter: not for passion or glory, but because a Hunter can earn a lot and access great resources.
Leorio is not a fighter. He doesn't have any particular skills and would often prefer to avoid confrontation. However, he wants to become a doctor and understands that sometimes it is necessary to do even what we don't like to achieve a goal.
In the seventies, psychologist Albert Bandura developed the concept of self-efficacy. While self-esteem indicates the value we attribute to ourselves, self-efficacy is the perception we have of our abilities. It indicates how capable we feel we are of doing something.
How many excuses do we tell ourselves to avoid facing the consequences of our choices? Maybe we think we can't do it, or that we'll disappoint the people around us. Sometimes we're afraid of how our life would change as a result of a choice and we don't know how to handle it.
I don't have money, I don't have time, I'm not capable, I come from a poor family, I can't excel at anything... Are we sure that's really the case? So why do poor people, without the help of their parents and without special abilities, still manage to achieve their goals?
"Even if I'm not as strong as you, I'll do my best to protect you."
Leorio seemed to have all the excuses in the world: he had no money, no great abilities and no important role in society. But he believed in others and others believed in him. Maybe what we need is for someone to believe in us.
Surround yourself with positive role models, reject the negative ones, notice and value small successes. These are the ingredients to remind ourselves that we can do it. Leorio reminds us that if we find a reason to live we can face any obstacle and we don't necessarily have to excel.
