This choice: Something happens along the way • Go Back...Chapter #4Pancaked and thrown out by: Tisch Knowing things could shake up in only a matter of moments, Jack constantly surveyed his surroundings as he moved out into the middle of the open office, almost in a paranoid state. At the same time, he had to be keen for an available section of the office to grow back. Balancing his attention between this seeking for a safe area and caution for danger was a difficult task. If Jack divided his attention too much, or focused on looking for one thing over another, he could either lose an opportunity or fall into a treacherous situation. As it would turn out, Jack would fall into the latter, though not because of negligence.
Slowly but surely as Jack trudged along, he gained a greater sense of ease. Things were overall pretty safe, with a few shifting movements from employees around him that occasionally made him hypervigilant but would ultimately lead to nothing. Jack kept his attention active and spread out for a few more minutes. His luck with finding a safe area wasn't great, but he was certain that it was just a matter of time until something opened up for him. However, the more time passed, the greater the chances that something bad would happen as well. This is exactly what happened as from a ways behind him, Jack heard a door open. He turned around to find the source of the opening door and realized it came from his boss's office. Out stepped the black-haired woman that ran the joint, Brenna. She seemed more relaxed than normal, her demeanor in a much more appeased state than she normally carried. Jack was relieved to see this, thinking that in part her nice demeanor had something to do with his productivity that morning. It was a nice thought, but Jack's thoughts soon shifted elsewhere as the woman then started walking his way. It appeared as though she was heading for the break room, and the pathway she was on was likewise the one Jack was on. The tiny guy at first didn't worry too much about it, but as his boss got closer and closer and her footsteps louder and louder, he started to panic. In his growing anxiety, Jack started to lose his attention to his surroundings and lost his sense of direction.
"Shit, shit, shit, where do I go? How do I know where she'll step?" the little man nervously muttered. He started hesitating in where he was going, first going right, then turning around and going left, then once again pausing and trying to regain his bearings. Things were going far too fast for Jack and he could not get his mind pieced together. Before he knew it, his giant boss was right on top of him. The brisk pace of her walking set her only a few steps away and threatening trouble for Jack. The tiny man's mind continued to race as she approached, the feeling of dread washing over him and the fear of her stepping on him becoming almost insurmountable. In his panic, Jack moved once more. However, he went in the completely wrong direction and managed to put himself right into Brenna's stepping path. Soon, Jack found a shadow looming over him. He looked up just in time to find a dirty black shoe falling down. "Ah!" Jack screamed.
*CRUNCH*
-------------------------
Hearing a strange popping noise, Brenna paused. "What was that?" the middle-aged woman thought. "That's weird." It was a very brief pause, as she quickly shook the thought off and continued her way into the break room. Every other step, Brenna would hear a faint squelch coming from beneath one of her heels. She grabbed a few things out of the fridge to make herself a snack, the little crunches and squelches piquing her interest real quick. After Brenna had made her snack, she turned around and went walking back to her office.
*SQUISH*
*STOMP*
"What in the world is that?" the woman thought. She entered her office and set her snack down on her desk. Brenna then lifted her heel up and found a contorted figure on the bottom of it. "Oh, that's disgusting!" the boss hissed. She slammed her foot bag down on the ground, with another wild smushing noise, before grabbing a tissue off her desk. Brenna then lifted her heel back up and peeled the figure, what she thought was a bug, off of her shoe. Wincing in disgust, the woman balled up the "bug" and tossed it into the trash. She then sat down and went to eating her snack. Brenna would never know that the bug she had squashed was the ever productive employee she had just been pleased with earlier that morning... |
