You stumble across a device capable of storing and manipulating the life roles of others.

You stumble across a device capable of storing and manipulating the life roles of others.

This is an interactive story. Each chapter tells part of the story and often ends with multiple choices. Make a choice and move to the next chapter in your story. When you reach a chapter that hasn't been written yet, don't be shy... make an addition!
The creator of this Interactive Story provides this information and guidance:
You take on the role of Ben, who finds a strange device known as the Identity Absorption and Manipulation Unit, or IAMU, that is capable of absorbing the life role of someone or something and granting it to another person.

This is going to be a little complicated to explain, so bear with me--

The IAMU has four buttons, labeled Absorb, Assign, Fuse, and Reset. The latter three have no use on their own, requiring the device to have a stored or active role to function. When you point the device at a person, or anything else that could be described as having an identity, and press the Absorb button, the IAMU will store that identity within itself--simultaneously, the target of the device will disappear, effectively being removed from the world. Reality will be altered so that anyone who knows of the target will be provided an explanation for where they have gone--for example, if you absorb the identity of someone engaged in a conversation with a friend, that friend will assume they went to go to the bathroom or had to leave for an emergency, and will carry on as normal.

Once you have an identity stored, you can then overlay that identity on another target using the Assign button. In doing so, the second target will be perceived as the first target by everyone but you. Furthermore, the new target will take on features of the old, such as wearing the same clothes or accessories--or an equivalent if assigning the identity of an inanimate object--and will act like the assigned identity. As an example, assigning the role of your best friend to your sister will leave her dressed in his clothes and acting like him, while assigning the role of a jogger to something like a fire hydrant will cause everyone to perceive the hydrant as the jogger. Like with absorbing an identity, overwriting an identity with a new one will adjust reality so the old one's absence is accounted for.

The Fuse function can be used when two or more identities are stored within the IAMU at one time; by pressing the button, whatever identities are currently stored within the device will be combined. Pressing the button once, then using the Assign button, allows both roles to be assigned at once to the same target, essentially meaning that target is perceived as both identities at the same time--however, the roles are entirely separate. If you absorb the identities of a pair of twins, for example, then use Fuse and Assign them to yourself, anyone who looks at you will see the two twins standing side by side, even though you are still one person. Pressing the button a second time will instead combine the two identities into a new, fused identity, with reality adjusting to accommodate the new identity that has been created. Like with Assign, the target of a fused identity, regardless of which version, will take on features and behaviors representing the combined identities, such as a mix of outfits from two people.

Lastly, pressing Reset at any point while the device's effects are active will undo all of the changes you have made, restoring reality to how it was before you had used the device. This will undo any actions done involving fused identities, but not those done involving assigned identities; if you were to assign another identity to yourself and do an action that identity would not normally do, such as assign yourself the role of the owner of a shop and give your friend free stuff, when you use Reset, that action will remain intact, perceived by the shop owner as something they did of their own volition.

Those under the effects of an assigned identity will be perceived by everyone and everything as the identity they have been assigned, including mirrors, photographs, and video and sound recordings. Additionally, they will have access to whatever talents and abilities their assigned identity would have, such as knowledge of another language or the ability to play the piano.
