What happens when virtual reality becomes actual reality?

The creator of this Interactive Story provides this information and guidance:
By the year 2100, Earth had become a largely uninhabitable wasteland. What handful of countries that remained tried to find a way to undo the damage to the planet, but to no avail. After many failed attempts to restore stability and balance, an alternative solution was proposed. Life for the average person had become unbearable, making it no longer worth living. So, why not give them a better life in a different way?

What had begun as plans for the next big MMORPG became the saving grace for the last remaining million humans or so left on the planet. Using an immense supercomputer and warehouses of servers, Project Morpheus was launched. With it, one could load their very consciousness onto a digital database and effectively implant themselves inside a virtual world as their own avatar, with no memories of their lives in the physical world. There, they could live out their life in whatever kind of world they could imagine, be it a fantasy world, sci-fi, or anything else in between.

It certainly beats living in the real world, most people figured, so it didn't take much convincing to get them to sign on. Thus, our tale begins as we follow these wayward minds inside their new lives.
