"What?" I couldn't give credit to what I was hearing, the little foreboding of wanting to reach out to Lisa took a turn for the absolute worst, my best friend was dead!
"Mike, how? what happened?" I managed to say after a small awkward period of silence, battling to not break down just like Mike did. Between tearful pauses he explained what was going on, Lisa apparently left last night to take a walk, something atypical for her but Mike didn't though much of it, maybe she just had a particularly bad day at work or something. And a couple of hours later he received a call from the police saying she was killed and her murderer was nowhere to be found
"If only I stopped her, or if I decided to go out with her I could have done something" Mike broke down again and I had to calm him down with the usual cliche phrases, knowing on these situations nothing but those platitudes could actually help. It wasn't his fault, he could do nothing to stop it, Lisa wouldn't want him to blame himself. I knew Mike enough to know that we were just both trying to lie to ourselves
Once he told me the details about the funeral and I promised to visit him soon I hung up the phone and finally broke down, making my own set of pointless assumptions. Why did I wanted to call Lisa? could I have changed this awful destiny if I decided to ignore whatever force impulsed me to call her? Could I have played any part of it? What if I decided to call her yesterday to help alleviate her stress instead of whatever I was doing?
And then I remembered that I still didn't remember, there was that strange dress, and that note I thought was a joke from Danny with the eerie message
"The door to your soul lies behind thick walls of stone."
What was that supposed to mean? It sounded like some sort of silly riddle, or at worst like a ridiculous start of a self help book that promises you to destroy the barriers that unlock your true potential or whatever. Nothing came to mind watching the note, but you couldn't ignore the disquieting aura it emitted, as if this little piece of paper held the key to something more important. Where was I yesterday? And why did I dress so fancily? I should remember at least that I was supposed to go to a fancy event..
