Chapter #5
Safety of Kindness
by: glkray
Dauphin looked past the layers of dead soldiers, trying to see the outline of any house, through her now blurring vision. She thought there might be one to the left so starting to trek over bodies was her only option. She held a hand to her side, too scared to pull the arrow out and let more blood pour.
Eventually, Dauphin made her way to a shedlike home. She banged on the door as hard as her weakened fists could manage until, finally, someone cracked the door. A pair of eyes peered from the slight opening and widened at the sight of the girl.
The person yanked the door open further and pulled Dauphin through onto the floor. Dauphin collapsed and closed her eyes, only to hear the conversation above her.
"Momma! There's a girl, she's hurt!"
"Becca, I told you not to go into that room during the battle! You could have been killed!"
"But, Momma, it's over. I knew it had to be Papa or James. Help her, please! I don't know what to do!"
"Fine, get some rags. I'll try to get the arrow out and wrap the wound. I don't know if it's too late for this girl..."
Hands grabbed Dauphin and she felt herself being raised onto a cot. Something soft was placed against her side and she felt flames as the arrow began moving in her side.
