The Captain looked at the girl. Much as he hated to admit it, she was right that the King would have to be notified. The last comment had been an all out threat of war, and some explanation about why this ordinary looking young girl would provoke such a reaction was needed.
Taking six of his trusted guards he escorted the girl to the palace. With threat of attack at any time he dared not remove more from the gate. Reaching the gatehouse he requested an audience with the King, or at least one of his advisors.
"The King is out of the city at present. Any matters of urgent business must be addressed to the commander of the guards."
It was a terrible thing to think of a fellow soldier, but the Captain knew that handing the girl over to the Commander would be signing her death warrant. The man would not think twice about handing her over to the enemy if it helped the city as a whole. There was always the other option of course of the King's mother... one of the only people who would tell him what to do and be listened to, although she was notoriously difficult to talk to.
