The Captain of the guard studied the girl carefully. Even with her face hidden within the shadow of her hood and by the darkness of the night there was something familiar about her.
"What did you say your name is?"
Her clear grey eyes met and held his. "I am Dauphin."
She got no further as recognition flashed across the soldier's face. Now everything made sense to him, the expensive mount, the plain but elegant cloak, and the girl's bearing. He motioned to one of his men. "Go to the king quickly. Tell him his brother's ward requests an audience at his earliest convenience."
He removed his headpiece and held his hand out to the her. "Dauphin, do you not recognize me?"
Her gaze traveled over his face missing nothing. A gasp of astonishment escaped her. "Danlin?"
The intensity of his blue eyes softened and is features eased into a rare smile. "Yes Dauphin." He paused a moment. "So you do remember"
She placed her hand in his and his fingers closed around it. "But how did you come to be here? You were thought to be dead, murdered by the evil one."
He replaced his headpiece and lowered his voice. "We must not speak of such things in the open. Come with me; we will talk as we stable your faelan."
The animal whickered, sensing his mistress' uncertainty, "But the king?"
She tried to pull back but he held her fast. "My men will know where to find us. Please come with me. You have nothing to fear."
