While Jeff's on the phone arranging for a pizza
delivery, his father leaves the kitchen.
Still cowering on the floor, Mike decides that he
would rather make contact with a single giant
rather than two of the behemoths at the same time.
He ventures out into the open, approaching the
giant youth's sneaker.
He hears Jeff giving an address for the delivery
of the pizza. Then, hanging up the phone, Jeff
starts to move.
Mike's heart almost fails as the giant sneakers
spring into motion and, in a blur of motion,
intrude into his personal space. The toe of a
giant sneaker stops only a fraction in front of
Mike. In fact, Mike can, and does, reach out and
touch the shoe. "Oh my God!" Mike cries. Not even
allowing himself to formulate much of a plan, he
scrambles onto the giant sneaker, trying to race
across the broad tongue of the shoe.
Suddenly, with an upsetting lurch, the sneaker
swings into high velocity as Jeff takes a few more
steps across the room. Mike pitches forward, but
he is able to grab onto the black laces looped
into the huge white sneakers. He holds onto the
thick cable of the laces with a grip of death.
Mike's muscles burn in agony, but he refuses to
release his grip. He is sure he would fall to his
death or, even worse, be stomped under the giant's
enormous shoes.
Finally, just when Mike is certain he cannot hold
on any longer, the motion stops. Exhausted, all
Mike can do is rest sprawled across the top of
Jeff's sneaker.
Jeff has seated himself at the kitchen table. He
is debating whether to go upstairs to his room and
log on to his computer or stretch out on the sofa
in the den and watch some television until the
pizza arrives. He happens to glance absently
toward the floor when he notices something atop
his left sneaker.
Curious, he stretches out his hand and nabs the
tiny form between his thumb and index finger.
Mike, still too weakened from his terrifying ride
on the giant's shoe, cannot even struggle.
