“I’m Matt, and I weigh 250.”
“Welcome, Matt, to the best school on earth for fat boys!” beamed the bigger of the two hallway cops. “I’m Farley, and I’m the chief of campus police around these parts. This morning, when Ms. Peach in the office weighed all of us, I was 605 pounds!”
600 pounds! thinks Matt. “You’re huge!” he stammers in surprise.
“Yup, finally topped 600 pounds!” says Farley, grinning. “And this is just the beginning,” he continues, gesturing to his awe-inspiring gut, “I’ve got plans.”
“600 pounds!” Matt says out loud this time.
“Cool, ain’t it?” Farley says. “And 6-0-5 is just the beginning! I’m going to have a GOOD year!” He pounds his absurdly huge teenage gut with one thickly padded hand as the other campus cop grins.
“Fats means he’s really going to put on weight!” the other guy interpreted (unnecessarily) for Matt.
“Yup!” adds Farley, grinning. “This is the year I stop growing ‘up’ and start growing ‘out’ - by the graduation, my ‘inner porker’ and I will have transformed this fat body!!”
Matt is dazed by this announcement. Transformed? Transformed into what? Farley - or ‘Fats’ as the other cop called him - is already the biggest human being Matt has ever seen! How big will he be once he’s ‘transformed’? How much more weight could he possibly gain?.
“I can see you don’t believe me,” remarks Farley, taking Matt’s stunned look for disbelief, “but I intend to eat and grow this year like never before. After all, there’s good reasons I’m called ‘Fats’ around here.”
“There sure are!” jokes the other fat campus cop. “I’m Thomas, by the way,” he goes on, “known around here as Tom Ton, even though I’m lighter than Fats. Though maybe not for long...”
“You say that every year!” retorts Fats. “But you haven’t beat me yet.”
“Yeah, well, this might be the year,” Tom Ton replies, “I can just feel a growth spurt coming on...”
Matt’s punch-drunk feeling has not gone away with this fat boy double act. Trying to regain his sense of balance, he asks Tom Ton, “How big are you? Are you two roommates?”
“Oh yes, we’re roomies,” Tom Ton replies. “Everybody at OSB has a roomie, so’s we can compete and boost one another - it’s good encouragement to grow - they try to match us carefully.
