A quiet voice came from the back. “Is he for real, coach?”
“He sure is!” replies the coach. “We were at school together, before I became a famous high school football coach,” coach paused, as first a few and then all the bus laughed, “and he became a famous pro wrestler. Some of you must have heard of Sam-o?”
“Was he a regular wrestler or a sumo, Coach?” asked another team member.
“I don’t know who said that, though I could guess,” snapped back the coach, “but there are no blond sumos, dumbass. Sam O was a big star, round about the time you guys were born.”
“What happened to him coach?”
“Yeah, did he eat his way out of the ring?”
“No, but one of you is looking to joke his way off my football team!” coach replies. “Or, even better - if you think he’s just a big fat guy, show up this evening for the armwrestling at 8 pm. If you meet him across the table, prepare to hurt!”
“Seriously, coach, what happened to him?”
“Well,” replied the coach, “he always was a big guy, but when he took an Achilles injury near the end of his second pro season, he was off for a year - which is too long in pro wrestling, they forget who you are. Especially when you blimp up by 80 pounds! He looked at getting into football instead, but that was before the era of today’s monster linemen, so he took the money from his product endorsements and sunk it into a hotel. Now he owns a chain.”
“So why are we here?”
“Well, this place is the apple of his eye - his little project. I know he doesn’t make money here, but he helps out a lot of high school teams who need to build size or strength. I’ve been here once before - we’ll have a good time, and you guys will come out stronger. Or at least bigger. OK boys, let's unload!"
