Trying to Get Some Space

Tom waved his arms in the air in front of his face, looking at the dangling sleeves of his shirt.

Suddenly, he heard the familiar "bing" that signaled the arrival of one of his online chat buddies.

He walked back to his computer. His mood brightened to see his pal Jason.

He typed back a greeting.

Jason's next message was an invitation to meet him at a local bar.

Tom thought about it. Maybe he should get out of the house. Might make him feel better.

"All right." He typed. "See you in 20 minutes."

But, after signing off his computer, he decided he should change into a shirt that fit better. He chose one of his tighter T-shirts.

He started downstairs. But his stepfather stopped him at the front door. "Where you going, Tom?"

"Out to meet a friend," Tom said.

"I don't know. You're not looking so well, Tom. Maybe you ought to stay in and rest."

He didn't want a scene, but he had no intention of spending the entire evening with his creepy stepfather and stepbrother. "I'm fine. See you later."

His stepfather stood in his way.

Tom suddenly realized his stepfather was looking different. Larger.

1. Stepfather insists that Tom stay home

2. Tom proceeds to the club to meet Jason
