Eric felt the world suddenly expand. He felt like he was falling.
Then, it was over. He realized that his lab hadn't expanded at all. His device had worked!
He looked around the huge laboratory. His lab equipment towered above him like. The control panel's console of dials, buttons and gauges loomed far overhead.
"I've done it!" Eric shouted in triumph. He was startled by the strange, high-pitched tone of his voice at his reduced size.
He estimated he was only about six inches tall. That had been the reduction he had programmed into the console panel. He was excited that not only could his device shrink things, but it could also be programmed to shrink them to a specific size.
He stood in the center of the elevated platform. He had programmed the device to reverse the shrinking automatically. He only needed to wait a few seconds and then he would be back to normal and able to carry out more tests.
The device began to hum — a much louder noise than he recalled. The sudden pyrotechnics of showering sparks erupted from the focusing lens of his device.
"What the hell?" Eric shouted in surprise.
The sparks flew overhead. Then, instead of building to a steady glow, the beam's lens simply went dark.
Eric experienced a queasy feeling in the pit of his stomach.
What had gone wrong?
Eric stared up at the distance control panel. To reach the controls would be a challenge equal if not surpassing the scaling of a tall wall.
He lowered himself over the edge of the elevated platform and dropped onto the floor. He sprinted across the floor and stopped at the base of the control console unit. He saw no way of scaling the device.
