All he could do was cower in the confidence-shattering presence of the mammoth student.
He was able to recognize the titan as a jock in one of his science classes. He believed his name was Scott.
At the moment, the jock looked more than 850 feet tall! Maybe it was only his imagination, but Eric felt the floor shudder with each step Scott took into the lab.
"Professor!" Scott called in a voice that rumbled through the room. "I've got to talk to you about my grades. Professor!"
As Eric witnessed the giant's movements, he noticed Scott walk toward his desk. The giant lowered his backpack to the floor and began to write a note.
Eric began racing across the floor. As he drew closer, Scott's enormous sneakers, looking 170 feet long, commanded almost all of Eric's attention. He swallowed, beginning to recognize the futility of his plan. How could he ever attract attention from such a giant?
Instead, he noticed a dangling thread that led into a side pocket on Scott's backpack. The pack towered more than 250 feet into the air, but if he could manage to climb the thread only about 70 feet, he could slip into the open pocket. It might be his only chance.
Eric seized the thread and used it to scale the side of the backpack. He reached the lip of the pocket. He looked into the shadowy interior, suddenly uncertain.
About that time, Scott finished writing his note. He reached for his backpack. The motion as he hoisted the pack settled everything.
Loosing his balance, Eric toppled into the pocket, which was like falling into a 24-foot deep pit.
Scott left the laboratory, unhappy about not finding the professor, completely unaware of his tiny passenger.
