A Small Rival

Don agreed to help his mentor. He would do anything for this god like creature, even if he was only the size of a Ken doll. He placed Eric in his lab-coat pocket and made his trip to the store cupboard.
He arrived back a short while later and put the tiny professor back down on the lab-desk and asked him for guidance in how to replace the lens. He wasn't really as dumb as not to know how to do this task but he was so turned on by the high pitched voice of the 12-inch Eric. Things were going well and although Don would have loved to take Eric home for a while and get to know him and his tiny body better, his respect for the professor was more important at this time.
Eric climbed onto the platform and waited for Don to set the machine working. He closed his eyes and crossed his fingers. He felt more nervous about the experiment now than he did when he had shrunk himself in the first place. He could hear the low hum of the machine as it kicked in.
Just then the lab door burst open and his arch rival, Ben Westlake burst in. Seeing Don in the lab alone, working on an experiment he flew into a rage. "What the hell do you think you are doing in here on your own? You know damn well that experiments can only be carried out in the presence of one of the professors. You'll be lucky if you last the week here."
Don stood next to the machine, looking from Ben to the machine and back again. Eric could see Ben moving like lightning towards the machine. Ben had seen something on the platform and reached out for it. As he did this Eric jumped off and Don turned the dial into reverse.
As Ben's hand reached out onto the now empty platform, the machine emitted a beam and in all the confusion the machine came crashing to the floor. As it plummeted downwards, Ben Westlake seemed to plummet too, not only down in direction to the floor, but down in size.
Eric raced towards the edge of the lab-desk and peered over at the broken machine. Don looked down and noticed a dazed but tiny Ben Westlake. He picked up the machine and placed all the broken parts on the desk, then he reached down and collected up the tiny Ben. He placed Ben onto the desk next to Eric.
Eric stood over him and looked down at Ben his arch rival who was now only ...
