Hamilton intended to show the guys to the library, but his cellphone went off before he could start. He forgot to check the caller id.
"Munchie?" went his mom's voice, all too audibly. Ham heard Scout snigger. He sighed.
"Mo-om. Don't call me that."
"Hmm? Never mind that, where are you? I have that new camera magazine you wanted."
Ham perked up. He'd been angling for a subscription for months, and then he'd entered a competition in the last issue. It was being adjudicated by Peter Beard. If he hadn't succeeded, the winner had better be good. "Cool. I'm in Krudsky and Calhoun's dorm."
His mom was there so fast. Will barely had time to bundle a protesting Bella under his bed.
Scout greeted Mrs Fleming smoothly. "We were just discussing the new faculty member." Scout angled hopefully for more information.
"Finn. You'll love learning from him."
"Do you know him?" Hamilton was surprised. His mom hadn't said anything about this when dad announced the appointment at dinner.
"I knew him many years ago-"
Judging from Will's expression, he was creating some fantasy backstory from whole cloth. It might involve cheap romance. Scout hoped Ham couldn't read Will like he could.
"-we went to college together. He was a scholarship boy from Rawley." She smiled at Will.
Will practically came to attention. "Yeah?"
"He's a wonderful, passionate, erudite man."
Huh. Really. Scout gave Mrs Fleming a doubtful stare.
Will made a note to look up the word erudite.
Hamilton gave Will's bed a concerned look. He heard a frightening -ah -ah
-choo!
Hamilton knocked over a pile of weights. He'd thought, when he first saw them, that they were unnecessary. There were perfectly good weights in the school gym. They made a good loud noise.
"Oh, Mun-" Kate cut off at Hamilton's death glare. "Hamilton."
"Yeah, yeah, better go." He nodded to the grateful Will and Scout, and swept his mom out of the room fast.
