Bella got a call on her cellphone from Grace, but Grace refused to tell her what the problem was over the phone. She insisted Bella get back to the station, immediately. She was terribly upset, crying too hard to talk properly.
Bella was concerned. Grace wasn't the crying type. Neither of them were, if it came to that. She was scared it might be some problem to do with the business. Profits were marginal, at best.
By the time she got home, Grace had calmed a little. "It's Ansel" she said, gulping slightly.
"Ansel?" Bella didn't know anybody called that. "Is this some new boyfriend of yours?" It figured. She'd been dragged across town for the sake of the ongoing soap opera that was Grace's lovelife. Wait: if she didn't know this boy Ansel, that could only mean one thing - "Ansel's from Rawley School, isn't he?"
Grace smirked. "Kind of." She wasn't looking forward to telling Bella this, but she had to admit the funny side.
"What's the crisis?" Bella wanted to know. She was entirely too calm. Couldn't she see her only sister was totally unhappy? It was as if she didn't care.
"They're taking him to the vee eee tee."
"Grace, I know you're in wolf form for part of the month, but you don't have to spell out.. oh god. Ansel's a dog."
"It's non medically necessary surgery" Grace said indignantly. "You know what Daddy always told us about plastic surgeons."
It's probably completely necessary if he's dating you, muttered Bella. She didn't feel very sisterly. Or sympathetic. "Grace, you've been slipping out when we lock you up." She was furious.
Grace pouted. She wanted Bella to help her save Ansel, and time was being wasted on side issues. "But what about Ansel? He's dumb, but he's really cute."
"That's a problem for the Dean - he does belong to the Dean, right? or Hamilton. I think Will said they're Hamilton's dogs." Bella tried to make her see reason. "He's an animal, Gracie."
Grace went off on a tangent. "Hamilton? Maybe I should talk to him."
"First" Bella said sternly, "we're going to discuss - again - why wolves running round downtown are a Bad Thing."
