Halfway along the hall, they ran into the Dean. They greeted him with a ragged chorus of "hello, sir"s.
The Dean looked faintly worried, as he often did.
Bella thought he just had that kind of face. She didn't find him, or any of the Rawley snobs, of interest.
Will often thought that it was a pity that he didn't enjoy his position as much as Will would have.
Scout suspected that the Dean was trying to cover his poor memory of his own students' names. The Dean's nervous glance at Bella, and statement "Hello, uh, er-" another worried look at Bella, who he obviously couldn't place "-boys" confirmed Scout's suspicion.
"I'm glad I ran into you, ah, Mr Krudsky."
He wanted Will to volunteer for something. Scout knew it at once.
"Really, Mr Fleming?" Will looked expectant and respectful and shiny.
"I have an especially important event coming up, and I want the school to look immaculate. I know I can rely on you-"
Scout and Bella lost interest. The Dean was a notorious hygene freak. While the environment - in general - mattered, obviously, they couldn't get up much of a head of steam about a litterbug campaign on the grounds.
