The magic text bonfire was a bit of an event. Sean made it into a party and a lot of gate crashers showed up. Some of them were kind of disturbing people, Scout thought.
That lanky girl, singing Fernando and dancing wildly in the flickering light of the flames. Her boyfriend - hmm, should Scout maybe recognise him? - toasting marshmallows and hot dogs in the occult heat. Some people's appetites couldn't be put off by anything.
Over there, was that annoying blond Brit. He was stalking around being mean to everyone he met. You'd think a teenage guy in a ridiculous leather duster coat would be worried about ridicule himself, Scout thought.
The most unwelcome person present was Finn. He kept sidling up to Bella. "Have you reconsidered?" he begged. "Don't you feel a vocation for your sacred calling?"
"Get away from me, you creep" Bella responded every single time.
"Is this guy bothering you?" Sean loomed up.
Scout was so jealous of him. Of course, going to Edmund High, Sean didn't have to worry about being mean to the English tutor. It was an unfair advantage, Scout felt.
On the other hand, Bella wasn't especially grateful for the he-man protection. "I can take care of this." She glared at Finn with real menace.
What she didn't tell Sean, and hadn't told Will, was that the strange dreams had continued. Every night.. She hadn't told anyone. The dream analysis book she'd borrowed from Grace was full of kittens and mealtimes and flying. In her dreams she fought the most horrible monsters.
Last night she had woken up in the middle of the local cemetary. Oh god, she thought. The last thing her daddy needed was for her to go crazy. Grace's special brand of craziness was quite enough to be going on with.
Sometimes, she considered going to find out what Finn had to say.
