The red haired Japanese beauty Rei Hino, her black hair running down the scale of her back, smiled at Ami as she walked into the house. "Hi, Ami!"
"Rei! I didn't expect you to come--"
"So soon? Well, I needed to see something for myself is all," Rei replied in a nonchalant tone, but with a somewhat anxious expression on her face. Ami wondered, momentarily, what she was thinking. Her eyes darted toward Ami's middle, but she didn't understand just what Rei was looking at, exactly.
"Is something wrong, Rei?" Ami asked, confused.
Rei's expression changed to one of mild surprise as she struggled to beat around the bush. "Huh? Oh, yeah, actually, something is wrong," Rei's eyes narrowed as she glanced down at Ami's torso. "It just looks like you're taking after stupid Usagi."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Ami asked, curiously.
"You're smart, Ami. I know you are. Did you ever consider, uh, running? Exercise? Or are you too busy studying to get physical activity?"
"I'm not following you."
Rei slapped her forehead with her palm, shaking her head in disbelief. "Damn it! You've gained weight!"
"Oh, I have?" Ami glanced down at her belly. Sure enough, it was pudgier than she remembered it to be. She rested her hands on her convex torso. She noted, as she rested her hands on her larger tummy, that her hands had been swallowed up in fat, her knuckles completely consumed, her arms pudgier than before. Her belly had grown, but it wasn't a pot belly or anything like that. Just a tad doughy, soft, her love handles still small little things that rolled over the side of her pants. Her legs, she noticed, had also grown. She pinched a small bit of blubber on the inside of her thigh, mildly surprised she had overlooked that. "Thanks for pointing that out, Rei! I didn't notice it at all!"
"How couldn't you notice that? It's blubber! I mean, really, Ami, you need to pay attention more to your body. I thought you wanted to be a doctor! Aren't doctors supposed to know about this sort of stuff?"
"Well, yeah, but--"
"But nothing! You need to diet."
"But diets usually deplete the body of nutrition it needs to survive," Ami pointed out, truthfully.
"Yeah, but it looks like you've been getting a little too much nutrition lately."
Ami considered her options. She could diet, but that might affect her studying abilities. Too little food would keep her from being really awake enough to focus. On the other hand, fat did affect her health, and that might hurt her more in the long run. Rei was right: it was unhealthy, but she wasn't sure which was more unhealthy.
