Denise had expected the counsellor to have more concrete suggestions, and his seeming lack of support discouraged her. In a fit of moodiness, she decided she was NEVER, EVER going to make friends at this school.
Coming out of the counsellor's office, she did something she'd hardly ever done before. She vented her frustration by kicking on the wall. Once, twice. Felt good. Three times, four times. Harder, faster. Five, six, seven.
"I know. I've felt like doing that sometimes, too, coming out of that office. I think that patch of wall that's chipped away was made by students doing that."
Denise was so startled she almost fell.
She turned to find a tall, bespectacled girl looking down at her, smiling.
"So what's Mr. Brown doing to make you feel that way, huh?"
Denise wondered what to do. She had just resolved she'd NEVER EVER make a friend, after all.
