The short sword is also a good weapon to have since it is relatively light and can be weilded one handed. This also means that you can strap it at your hip, rather than across your back.
The shield straps to your forearm and leaves your hand free but useless, since it is blocked by the shield. This is truly only beneficial protection with a short sword, since a long sword uses two hands to weild and therefore, the shield cannot be used.
You also obtained the Orb of Forsaken Fire, which will create fire anywhere, even in water. You also received 1,000 copper pieces and 75 silver pieces. The exchange rate is 1 silver piece=175 copper pieces. Use the money wisely. Not all things are free.
