You lose all sense of time as you plod along beside the lava, one foot after the other, like a mechanical man. A mechanical man whose batteries are running down. You notice that you are no longer moving faster than the flow of lava.
Your mouth is dry. You are so thirsty. Perhaps you should rest. Just lie down here on the warm rocks and rest.
You lie down on the warm rocks. Your eyes close. Sleep comes quickly. A deep sleep. You dream. a pleasant dream at first, but then an intruder appears in your dream. A thing like a man, but not a man. A thing with horns and red skin, a thing that laughs at your fear.
You are paralyzed, unable to wake up. You struggle to open your eyes, to move a hand, anything. The thing like a man is big and strong. Muscles ripple in it's arms and legs. It picks you up in its arms and tosses you up and catches you. It laughs. You are screaming in your mind although your mouth makes no sound. It's a long wailing scream that continues even as the thing like a man tosses you out into the river of lava and you feel the hot touch of molten rock on your skin, hear the sizzle of burnt flesh, feel the searing pain...
