The man in silver is disgusted. He shouts at the woman. "That's your only solution, isn't it? Kill this. Destroy that. Don't you realize that we would only be dealing with one node now instead of four if you had just restrained your murderous impulses?"
The woman is furious. "I had to do something! They were spawning. What else could I do but destroy the node? How could I know that two new nodes would arise to replace it?"
"But you destroyed those two as well..."
"They were still spawning! What help were you? There was no input from you. Now you criticise me."
"You could have contacted Galactic Command for help."
"And wait three days for a subspace comm to go through? They were spawning every 8 hours. I had to take action."
"But I don't see what harm they've done. They have no weapons. They don't know anything. Their minds are blank except for a basic knowledge of reality. Why do you fear them so?"
The woman looks up at him, her eyes dark and hostile. "They are an unknown factor. They bypass all our security. Are you a fool that you have no problem with that?"
The man in white speaks up. "How many of them are there now?"
"We aren't even sure about that," says the man in silver. "We know there is one living in Tal Bryn's village in Nevermore Canyon. We found two inactive ones near there by the river. Apparently they fell off the ledge and were damaged when they hit the ground. There have been several sightings on the river. Sometimes they are walking, sometimes in a boat. I don't know how many more."
"It's puzzling," says the man in white. "Continue the investigation. I will give you whatever help you need."
The woman whirls around. "We should blow this planet to smithereens!"
"Calm yourself! This situation has unraveled you. If it were not for your connections, I would have you terminated."
The woman's face goes white. "You dare to threaten me?"
The man in white looks worried. "Of course not! Your help in this is invaluable."
