When Mal noticed River coming in, he didn't know if he should be relieved or frightened. You never could tell what she was libel to do. Sure she always meant well, but should he chance it in his current state?
As River walked barefoot into the cargo hold she noticed the large jeweled box. Her curiosity got the better of her and she ran toward it to look at and touch it.
"No ruttin way!" Mal panicked, he was on the same side of the box she was facing and he'd never make it around the edge time. He just backed up, covered his head, closed his eyes and hoped for the best as the sound of her footsteps got louder.
He heard her thunderous footsteps stop with a gust of wind and noticed he was still breathing. He opened his eyes and saw he was face to face with her big toe. She had missed him by less than an inch.
He looked up to see her running her hands along the top of the crate, examining it. She shifted her feet as she moved down the length of the crate. Mal fell over trying to dodge her feet as they moved.
About the time Mal got back on his feet and dusted himself off she had circled the crate and was coming back around. He was directly in the path of her feet this time. Mal turned around just in time to see River's barefoot come down right on top of him, knocking the wind out of him.
River could feel something small under her feet that she had never stepped on before while walking Serenity. She didn't quite know what to make of it. And pushed down slightly and let up a few times with different parts of her foot to see if she could make out anything about the object. "Not sharp. Very small. Too small to be important." She stopped adjusting her feet. "Insignifigant."
