Melissa and I, wearing our Barbi clothes, walk over to the stairway to the first floor.
"Ellen!" Melissa says. "We can't go down those!"
I have to agree with her. At our current size, it's a long jump from stair to stair. "Maybe we can lower ourselves down with a rope?"
But I can see Melissa is scared to death and since it is now about eighty feet down to the first floor, I don't blame her.
"Call your Mom on your cell phone!"
"Good idea!" and we run back into my bedroom. Unfortunately, my cell phone is on my nightstand, about thirty feet over our heads.
"Now what?" Melissa says.
But I already have a plan. "If we can climb up on the bed, we can reach the nightstand from my pillow."
The bedcovers reach to the floor, so it seems theoretically possible to climb up, but we cannot get a grip on them to pull ourselves up and we give up after a few tries.
"We have to go down the stairs, Melissa."
Her face wrinkles up like she is going to cry. "I can't, Elle." A litle tear rolls out of one eye.
I hug her. "Don't cry. We'll be alright."
There is a sound downstairs of the kitchen door opening, the sound of claws on linoleum, the barking of my dog Suzy.
"It's Suzy!" Melissa's eyes widen. "What if she eats us!"
"Don't be silly, Melissa!" But I am a little worried myself. I remember how Suzy killed a squirrel in the backyard.
